Cliffs of Moher

Travels

Having seen the cliffs at the Aran Islands, I figured the Cliffs of Moher would be similar and we would do a quick drive by on our way down the west coast of Ireland. As always, I was wrong and was blown away by what I saw. Figures.

This sign pretty much sums up our Cliffs of Moher experience. Between the wind, the rain and the slippery rocks, you are literally one step away from death. How comforting! Thankfully we waited until after our visit to read up on the amount of causalities that happen there each year. Yikes! That probably would not have stopped me anyway though, I’m like a moth to a flame for these natural wonders.

See what I mean? Moth to the stinking flame. To quote The Lion King, “I laugh in the face of danger, ha ha ha”. That is about as close as I got though, one wrong move and you are toast. Both thrilling and terrifying at the same time. Not to mention absolutely beautiful.

That is some serious postcard material. The waves crashing, the green grass blowing, the lookouts on the edges of the cliffs. Amazing. We walked up and down for quite some time and took about a million pictures each, understandably. I could have stayed there for hours and hours, although being there in the dark would be absolutely crazy. No thank you!

Here’s another picture for some scale – itty bitty people, HUGE cliffs. Past the main cliff there are not any railings, walls or anything of the sort so you are on your own and you better watch your step because the mud is oh so slippery. We were also told by a local that night that the Cliffs are known for “foul play” and many people go there and just throw others off. How lovely.

Of course, none of us could leave without taking one last picture unnervingly close to the cliff edge. We discovered the best bet is keeping a low center of gravity and just doing the butt-scooch little by little, take a quick picture and then get the heck out of there. Our game plan worked well but the wind began to pick up, so we headed off the the gift store to do some damage.

Leaving you with a fun fact: The Cliffs of Moher are nominated to be one of the 7 Natural Wonders of the World and if you would like to get in on the action and vote the link is right here.
