Catch All

“Texting is tacky. Calling is awkward. Email is old. Next time try…Somebody!”

That’s what my e-mail read today from Miranda July who I’ve talked about before for her brilliance. Somebody, is a new messaging app available for free download in the iTunes store. The concept is simple, “When you send your friend a message through Somebody, it goes – not to your friend – but to the Somebody user nearest your friend. This person (likely a stranger) delivers the message verbally, acting as your stand-in.”

In a time where we are condemned for constantly using our phones and being slaves to social media, this is a perfect opportunity to bridge the gap between reality and the perceived reality that is the cyberspace. Since the app has just launched this morning at the Venice Film Festival, there may not be and overwhelming amount of users yet, however, you can visit the “floating messages” tab to check out any messages that have yet to be delivered – in person. I think I’m going to give it a go and see where it takes me, you never know! Check out the (hilarious, quirky, at times inappropriate) short film below for a better idea of what you might be getting yourself into:
