I am learning to listen to my inner speedometer, which often tells me I'm going too fast, hence the less frequent posts. Readers may not be familiar with its name, The Knight with the Cart. Sometimes they conquered peacefully by digging irrigation canals and co-opting the locals into agrarian, Wari-controlled lives. His fame and popularity were such that within a generation his true identity had been obscured by legend. I worked out who was behind the plot fairly early on - you dont have to be Sherlock Holmes.

Franco Sacchetti, fourteenth century Florentine writer of short stories, favored “Get dog-worm!” In his tales it was said by a lord to his buffoons, a peasant to a wolf, a husband to a wife, and a nobleman to his servant. Sadly, she was convicted and ordered executed by firing squad on October 15, 1917.

Her early reign passes by too fast in Empress of the Night to reveal her evolution from enlightened despot to determined reactionary in her final years. It charts the experiences of a group of childhood friends who grew up in Moscow's Arbat district. Here are two historical books about women: This is about one of the daughters of the famous scientist, who was a cloistered nun near Florence, but took care of many of her father's business interests from inside the convent.

It was a not a royal property, and just as important, it was a strategic location. The most obvious way to verify a woman’s virginity was to inspect the hymen. Instead of devoting a page or two to the Cather-as-boy phenomenon, O'Brien names it cross-dressing (thus bringing the weight of feminist criticism on that subject to her argument) and devotes an entire chapter to the youthful gendering. As Marthe's tale unfolds, like velvet itself, stitched with its own shadow and light, it helps to guide Solange on her own path.

I had remembered it as a somewhat atypical historical romance, but in fact it's an exhaustively researched and very well-written biographical novel about Elizabeth Fones, a niece of John Winthrop, a severe Puritan who was a founder and governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Also worth a read is "Death Comes as the End," a murder mystery set in ancient Egypt 2,000 years B. First, Josephus, writing at the end of the first century AD may not have been aware of the slaughter in Bethlehem at the end of the first century BC.

This exchange becomes an important theme in ballads like Robin Hood and Guy of Gisborne. I love the idea of making things and using recipes too. Exactly what ensues after the beginning of Paul's brief "champagne friendship" (484) with the freshman from Yale is never stated, but such reticence would not ill serve the purposes of a writer acquainted with the predictably long, minutely described, and often sensational interludes of erotic interest one is apt to find in Balzac, assuming that the suggestion of such an association is implicit in Cather's ellipsis.

Things did not look good for David, yet wasn't the Lord on his side? Don’t just throw your characters into costumes and alter their speech just a tad, but don’t overwhelm the reader with hundreds of pages of historically accurate detail and end up with more of a nonfiction history text either. Anglophone philosophy of history is also marked by its conscious self-distancing from the teleological systems of the Hegelians.

What unites them is a shared belief that historiography should highlight rather than obscure the achievements of individuals under the banner of necessary rational progress, a general ridicule of any historical process which brings about providential ends in the face of overwhelming global suffering, an anti-statist political stance, and a disavowal of progress as coextensive with the expansion of social welfare, intellectualism, and utility. Disinherited by his father, disowned and dishonored, Wilfred allies himself with Richard.
