The charm of the Zapatistas, and their survival, has as a lot to do with their targets as with the compelling and wildly potent language and aesthetics they’ve used to exhibit their imaginative and prescient. Weaving jointly diverse components of poetics and symbolism, Zapatismo has emerged as whatever totally new: a resolutely radical public family crusade for human liberation.

The first “postmodern revolution” offered itself to the realm via a posh and evolving internet of propaganda, utilizing quite a lot of media: the colourful communiqués of Marcos; the ski mask, uniforms, toy dolls, and different accoutrements of the rebel or sympathizer; and work of art, songs, and different renowned cultural kinds. utilising persuasive exposure, myths, and logos, the Zapatistas either communicated their message and built a transparent aesthetic that may comprise many messages right now and self-replicate on a world scale. Resistance demands flexibility, strategic adaptation to the means of the invader, a changing of tactics to fit the moment. In plant populations and in human populations, resistance has a common meaning—to doggedly hold on to one’s customs and one’s habitat in the face of an enemy intent on overtaking that habitat and those customs. In both cases, resistance remains dormant until a threat appears. But when the threat appears, watch out. ” Native peoples of the New World, even as they fell to disease and cultural onslaught, have fiercely resisted the colonial invader since 1492.

Zapatismo, aside from creating a new kind of social movement that seeks to build local alternatives to power rather than to take the power of the state, has created an image and a mythic space that is unique among liberation movements, and that has allowed it to survive in the popular imagination, and therefore on the ground, for a decade and a half now. By taking early and strategic advantage of the Internet and the news media, the Zapatistas have kept their story in the headlines, at least in their own country, and sometimes elsewhere.

The writings of Subcomandante Marcos, filled as they are with native voices, hybrid styles, and demanding, sometimes mystifying content, have not been embraced by any literary establishment, in Mexico or elsewhere, and it will undoubtedly be long after his death (or perhaps not so long, given the hungry proclivities of the culture industry) that his work gains significant recognition as literature. But there can be little doubt that Marcos’s writing deserves literary treatment and literary analysis.
