They completed the deal within ten minutes and JR’ became the proud owner of his very first (of many) Harley-Davidson motorcycles. He was thrilled beyond belief. “Had to have the guy teach me how to start it,” he remembers. ” JR’ went on to say laughingly on the way back to Sanger from Oak Hill—his urge to ride his new possession got the best of him. He and his brother-in-law unloaded the motorcycle from the pickup so he could try it; JR’ couldn’t wait any longer. ” He said he got it coasting down the hill pretty good when he jammed it into gear—it fired up and off he went.
Chapter Three JR’s Military Training JR’ didn’t care much for KP in the Army, but that’s about the only thing he remembers not to his liking. Ft. Thomas, Kentucky, was what you would call a reception center for the Army. The new soldiers spent most of their day getting disease inoculations and uniforms; boots and all the necessary items, less weapons, they would need prior to leaving for their basic training camp. After three days at Ft. Thomas, JR’ boarded a train headed for California and Camp Roberts, located about half way between Los Angles and San Francisco.
M. soldiers begun loading inside the many LCV (Landing Craft Vehicle), stationed on the deck of the Prince Leopold. The LCV was to be lowered into the water while other soldiers were to climb down rope ladders into waiting LCV’s. Thousands of men made up the first wave. The staging of boats with men and equipment were critical to a meticulously planned invasion. Very little chaos appeared but it wasn’t a walk in the park either. Shit happens! All soldiers were told that if someone fell in the water, too bad—leave them.
