In response to a Spike Lee interview that appeared a week earlier,9 Aterman said, “I take issue with Lee’s comment that ‘white males have problems with black men’s sexuality. It’s as plain and simple as that. ’ No, Spike, it isn’t as simple as that. ” Note that Spike Lee’s statement about “white males” did not say “all”; rather, that is how Robert Aterman and the Newsweek editors who printed his letter heard it.
