Is it simply a matter of staving off attacks from new subjects or is there something significant in the emphasis on `repensé'?

To discuss its significance as part of the general education curriculum from this basis is therefore to venture a step beyond the dominant philosophy in much foreign language teaching. The first stage of my argument will seek to establish that Cultural Studies has a rightful place as part of language teaching, not just as an adjunct to language learning, not just as a means of creating better Page 4 communication but as an integral component with appropriate aims and methods. It certainly plays a role in language teaching in the sense that words in the foreign language refer to meanings in a particular culture creating a semantic relationship which the learner needs to comprehend.

In broad terms there have been two opposing tendencies in `modern' language teaching since it was grafted onto `classical' language teaching in the nineteenth century. The anciens of the nineteenth century wanted to model their teaching of modern languages, usually French, 2 directly on the teaching of Latin and Greek (Gilbert, 1953-5). The consequent `grammartranslation method' has been widely and justly criticised, but it should not be criticised for not doing what it did not set out to do: to produce speakers of the language on the model of, and assessed against the ideal of, a native speaker and a highly educated native speaker to boot.
