In broad terms there have been two opposing tendencies in `modern' language teaching since it was grafted onto `classical' language teaching in the nineteenth century. The anciens of the nineteenth century wanted to model their teaching of modern languages, usually French, 2 directly on the teaching of Latin and Greek (Gilbert, 1953-5).
