Turning a corner, John saw Annie Castor leaning against her locker. She was talking to some friends. She smiled as he approached. Annie was a sophomore, but she never treated John as if he were a year younger. “H-hi, John,” she said. “Hey, Annie,” John said with a wave. He turned to the other girls. ” The girls smiled and looked at Annie. John was already turning from just some redheaded kid into a good-looking young man. ” John asked Annie. “Of c-c-course. ” one of the girls asked. ” “Ugh,” the girl said.

Mr. Glenn tapped John’s chest, right over his heart. John nodded. “There are some things we can’t touch with our hands. We can’t see them with our eyes. But we feel them. Things like God and our love for our country. ” Mr. Glenn put his arm around John’s shoulder. ” John looked into his father’s eyes. ” New Heights On a cold winter morning, John put on his warmest clothes. After school, he and his friends were going sledding. “You can take that sweater off,” Mrs. Glenn said, entering the room.

He imagined the Girl Scouts giggling at dumb jokes or playing with dolls, or whatever it was girls did at sleep overs. Outside the house, trees rustled in the wind. A few drops of rain hit the window in John’s room. Then a few more streaked the glass. Within a minute, the rain poured down. John saw a flash of white light, then heard the boom of thunder. “Some storm,” John said to himself. He got up to close the window. As he climbed back into bed, he thought of just one thing: how the camp would be through the storm.
