Frequently, manufacturing engineers will continue an investigation when the return for the effort is not worth the time and expense. Placing a time limit on each step forces evaluations to be made. We see from Fig. 2-6 that project steps and phases and activities are linked. The steps of a project are the chronological order of accomplishment. The phases are the managerial work or process we are engaged in to do each step. The activities are the actual tasks we are performing to complete the phase and doing so in the proper chronological order. It is important to understand the project phase we are engaged in so we can emphasize the proper activity to be successful. For example in organizing the emphasis is on planning not necessarily doing things to accomplish a physical task.
