4 3 Most Unlikely: Very high probability the event will not happen. Will Not Happen: Very little chance the event will happen, or event will not happen. 2 1 0 Figure 2-10. Probability of Occurrence Table of explanatory verbiage. The results are usually a ranking as we see in this typical probability of occurrence table, Fig. 2-10 It is desirable to convert this ranking to a percentage. We can do this in a macro manner by simply multiplying by ten to get a percentage number. The range then would be from 10 to 100%.
Frequently, manufacturing engineers will continue an investigation when the return for the effort is not worth the time and expense. Placing a time limit on each step forces evaluations to be made. It is acceptable in this type of work to draw conclusions once two-thirds of the data has been gathered and evaluated. In practical problems involving manufacturing, it is usually impractical to define 100% of the parameters and data. Strict observance of time periods is essential for efficient utilization of manpower.
We see from Fig. 2-6 that project steps and phases and activities are linked. The steps of a project are the chronological order of accomplishment. The phases are the managerial work or process we are engaged in to do each step. The activities are the actual tasks we are performing to complete the phase and doing so in the proper chronological order. It is important to understand the project phase we are engaged in so we can emphasize the proper activity to be successful. For example in organizing the emphasis is on planning not necessarily doing things to accomplish a physical task.
